Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012, Subak is one of the world's oldest community-managed irrigation systems. Beyond managing water, it preserves Balinese traditions, strengthens local communities, protects the environment, and supports sustainable tourism by maintaining the iconic rice terraces that have become a symbol of Bali.

The Pekaseh is the elected head of a Subak. Serving without heavy bureaucracy, they ensure equity so that even the most downstream farmer receives their sacred share of mountain spring water. They harmonize technical irrigation with spiritual harmony (Tri Hita Karana).
